What is Cellulite?

Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition that causes a lumpy, dimpled or “orange peel” look to the skin. Most common areas are the buttocks, thighs, stomach and even upper arms.

Many people suffer from cellulite, regardless of weight or size. As fat cells accumulate, they push up against the skin which creates an uneven surface or dimpling.

In addition, hormonal factors play a large role in the development of cellulite, and genetics determine skin structure, skin texture and body type. Other factors, such as weight and muscle tone affect whether you have cellulite, though even very fit people can have it.

There are three stages of cellulite:

  1. First stage: Firm form of cellulite, it is also called “fatty” cellulite.
  2. Second stage: Moderate, jiggly form of cellulite, also called “Watery” cellulite.
  3. Third stage: Severe, leathery form of cellulite, also called “fibrous” cellulite.
