What are Thin or Asymmetrical Lips?

As we get older, our collagen production decreases as a result we can lose volume and asymmetry in our lips. Even if you are only in your twenties, you could see a decrease in collagen production if you are exposed to the sun without any protection. This is because the skin on your lips contains fewer melanocyte cells (the cells that provide UV protection and give skin its colour), and sweat glands (making them more prone to moisture loss) than the rest of your skin, they’re especially vulnerable to sun damage, environmental aggressors, cold and dry temperatures, as well as intrinsic aging factors.

This is why maintaining a proper skincare routine including SPF is so crucial to slowing down the aging process and protecting the skin from environmental factors.

The above mentioned contribute to the declining collagen, and cause the lips to age at a more rapid pace. The most common concerns for aging lips is a loss of lip line definition, volume loss, and the appearance or deepening of pursing lines over the lips and around the mouth known the “smokers lines.”

Treatment Options for Thin or Asymmetrical Lips

One of the most effective and recommended treatments for thin, aging and asymmetrical lips is injectables coupled with proper skincare and SPF protection. Dermal fillers which are composed of hyaluronic acid ( a natural substance found in the skin which naturally retains water) are one of the most effective, if not the most effective way to instantly correct thinning, asymmetrical lips.
Dermal fillers, sometimes called soft tissue fillers, are substances like hyaluronic acid designed to be injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. Substances used in dermal fillers include: Restylane, Stylage, Juvederm, and more.

If injectables are not for you, other popular treatments for aging lips include clinical treatments such as microneedling (collagen induction therapy), Hydra Dermabrasion, non invasive laser treatments, micropigmentation such as lip blushing and cosmetic acupuncture.
